Butylone (also known as β-keto-N-methylbenzodioxolylbutanamine, βk-MBDB, or B1) is a synthetic entactogen and stimulant belonging to the phenethylamine and cathinone classes. Butylone is the β-keto analogue of MBDB and the substituted methylenedioxy analogue of buphedrone.
As a designer drug, it is frequently sold on the street, often alongside ethylone, as a substitute or counterfeit for MDMA and methylone (collectively referred to as “Molly”), due to the decreasing availability of methylone on the research chemical market.

Cathinones are structurally similar to amphetamines, containing a phenethylamine core with a phenyl ring linked to an amino group (NH₂) via an ethyl chain with an additional ethyl substitution at Rα. Cathinones like butylbutylone are alpha-methylated phenethylamines (i.e., amphetamines), but differ from them by the addition of a functional ketone group (a carbonyl group at Rβ). Butylone contains a methyl substitution at Rα, a substitution common to MDEA, ethylone, 4-MEC, and certain other stimulants and entactogens. Additionally, butylbutylone contains oxygen substitutions at R3 and R4 of the phenyl ring. These oxygen groups are incorporated into a methylenedioxy ring via a methylene chain. Butylon shares this methylenedioxy ring with MDA, MDAI, and MDMA.
It acts as a mixed reuptake inhibitor/releaser of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These are the neurotransmitters responsible for pleasure, reward, motivation, and concentration. It does this by inhibiting the reuptake and absorption of these neurotransmitters after they have fulfilled their function of transmitting a nerve impulse, essentially allowing them to accumulate and be reused, producing physically stimulating and euphoric effects.
